Dirty Tower successfully played at 5.22 pm
Called to order 5.24 pm
People too distracted by food and beer to come up with their agenda items
Chuck Ferrin announces that they are giving room draw points to those with the cleanest room at the end of the year.
- “Room draw points have no real value, but to earn one you have to spend about $3000, so give it your best shots
David Banks takes a break to let people eat
5.37 Meeting called to order again
Harvey Thomas (Police Officer)
- Been here 8 years
- Police work for 30 years
- “We’re here to protect you, so I don’t know why we are discussing after hours pool”
- “After hours there are no lifeguards to protect you”
- “Students only got by before because our paper works was a real pain in the ass”
- “We’re getting a new computerized system that will make things easier” (Collective sigh)
- “Don’t be in the pool after hours, it’s not safe”
- David – We now have wireless mics (Cheering)
- “Fences are all about, you’re either in or out”
- Jessica “Sunshine” Certain – “Are you worried that if people are uncomfortable for fear of punishment that students will keep doing it and just not call to be let out.”
- “No, more people have been let out … check the pool every couple hours, you don’t want to find a floater in the pool”
- He will be available for questions through the meeting
David opens discussion on pool:
- Tom “I don’t understand why we can’t keep things the same way as long as we don’t get hurt”
- Discussion closed
Green Fee (Amy Ortiz and Dawn Yukus)
- A student fee we’re proposing, or the state is discussing, a few cents per credit hour going into a renewable energy fund, encourage campuses to adopt better energy conservation, would promote rising awareness
- How would the money be spent?
o At new college we’d hope for students to vote
o Amy and her met with John Martin about a possible sustainability council next semester
- So basically $16 a year added onto your tuition
- $12,000 a years
- We’d want students to vote on what to do with the money
- UF has passed it with 70% approval rating
- Fee wouldn’t go into affect next year, probably happen in the 2008-2009 acedemic year
- Max Feretti: how can we ensure that we’ll actually get to decide where this money goes? It would suck if it just went into the system
- Amy: at other schools they have a group of student working on this, so we’d hope the sustainability steering committee doing it
- Rio De La Muerte: “I think sustainability is awesome, but I think right now we’re already at peak oil, so we should have done this a hundred years ago. All you can do is start believing in god, cause god is awesome!” (Cheering)
- Aaron Rackoff: Do we get matching funds from the state?
- Amy: it’s still in it’s infancy, so it’s a possibility
- Max: What can $12,000 dollars do?
- Dawn: It’s to get this sort of program rolling
- Amy: If all 11 public universities in Florida pass this, it will be a good symbol at where the student body is at and what we’re willing to do
- Sam Greenspan: “Will this act as an initiative to do something other than just get funds started”
- Amy: remains to see what problems would be possible a
- David Banks: You can retrofit a golf cart to be solar powered for less than 500
- Genevieve Luikart: This is to start New College conserving, and this money would go towards what we can’t purchase right away. Putting money to things like renewable energy credits. You’re money is an investment that the school will use to save money and put money back into the school.
- The board rolls off wall, pushed by wind (cheers, someone yells “the spirits have spoken”
- More Discussion
- “Students will be paying for it, so students will decide on how it’s spent
- Police officer: “I check on 52 buildings a night, and I’m the guy turning out those lights.”
- Straw poll (as this will be put on the ballot) proposed by David Banks: All in favor of the proposed green fee as it’s been described, ya that’s a majority
- Amy: “I love you guys”

Chuck Dohn (the CAA)
- issues with CAA bylaws
- concensus or discussion
- 1st issues: limit on number of application a student can be awarded per semester
- 2nd: proposes that requiring a faculty member’s signature is unnecessary
o Isaac comes up to talk about China trip, requirement ruined their trip
o Recommends it should be considered and not a requirement
- Melissa Jacobowitz:
o Likes this discussion
o Thanks the SAC for extra money (applause)
o Feels that the first issue should be decided on how the student body feels
o Second issue: One argument that is made, is that the CAA is just a committee of students, and in many ways CAA is not qualified to judge the acedemic merit of your expenditure
o Put all allocation on equal footing of academic merit
o Says Anthony and Isaac’s case was miscommunication
o CAA is updating it’s bylaws right now, will maybe need a faculty signature of support perhaps
- Genevieve: “ Maybe the committee needs to do better communication”
- Melissa: It’s on the site, and a link on the application
- Trevor: Struggle to choose equity or quality, giving two allocation makes taking money away from another project, interested to hear what students have to say
- Annemarie: “Maybe the law can be more equitable”
- Lucia:”Why does the CAA have less money?”
- Melissa: “ I can’t answer that right now, but SAC allocation by definition need to benefit a larger portion of the student body, and the CAA benefits individual projects. We’re trying to increase the diffusion of helping the NCF community.”
- Anthony: “ SAC funds go through services and something fees. CAA is a unique feature, we decreased SAC 80 from 92 thousand.
David Brooke Anderson
- I heard the move-in date is Sunday before mini-classes
- Students boo
- Discussion open
- Rio: “Let’s move in the Friday before mini-classes”
- David Banks explains the situation (see previous cabinet meeting minutes)
- Jordan Clark: “What are the odds that the building will be finished for Sunday if they’re not finished for Friday?”
- Annemarie Roberts: Suggests that it be demanded that in future this be better rboguht to our attention.
- Thaddeus: This has been on the calender for two years
- Rio: If everyone came on Sunday and not on Friday, what would they do?
- Jordan: If we were supposed to be looking at this two year ago, why didn’t think that they would have dorms be done in time if they had so much time to plan.
- Emily Rose: Valuable that work crew needs
- Mem Ward: “I don’t see why there would need to be more time to move in. Important time to socialize and getting to know the new students, before they start classes, and us having time to meet the new members of our community.”
- Was mentioned to admin in the memorandum
- The admin said the sole reason was construction
- Amy: “So it seems like the student body is not happy about this, seems like the least the admin can do is promise that this will never happen again.”
- David: We requested it, and they said no.
- Kiri Cutts: “I’m concerned about having moni classes jump straight into classes.”
- David: The calender was drafted by the EPC, and they were put in the Four Winds, and no on said anything.
- Donita Pace: We’ve always has one day to move in before mini-classes.
o Construction makes it absolutely not available
o 24 hrs ins the standard nation wide? (student: since when is new college standard)
o Discussion
o If you show up on Friday you will get tresspassed
- David: We checked vaverage move in date, and the average move in date is five days
- Rio: Advocating that first years looking ahead, and keep an eye on the admin before things get worse(Applause)
- Spencer: Same week as burning man, skip this week and first three days of school, and go to burning man (Applause)
- Jordan Clark: A lot of change in the structure of the school, ad more time would have been better for adjusting.
- Isaac: If you really have a problem about this, we have to discuss this next year
o Remember to be upset about this next year
o David: hold grudges
- Discussion
- Kerem: “Is the move-in date on the acedemic calender for returning students? No, so we didn’t know”
- Who and when is the move-in day decided
- Donita: It’s always the day before mini-classes

- Jamie Valentine: “ Puts a financial strain on me. The reading week is also a problem.”
- Student: Is there a waiver for students that can’t afford to come back on campus?
- David: We might have a refugee camp in several different houses (with pools and bars)
- Jessica Plante: Expresses concern of students who have to fly in
- Rebah Solomon: “Mentioned that it’s 24 hrs before mini-classes, and mini-classes are traditionally on a Thirsdsay, is that an abhoration or is that not policy”
- Emily Rose: “I am on the EPC, this si the kind of stuff I want to know about. I’m excited about changing things like this, send your comments.”
- Anna Folkers: “When is move-in for the first years? The Wednesday? I think this is more of an inssue for incoming firt years than for us, so they can have a chance to think about. Think about the first years”
- Alex Cline: “Who’s interested in starting the NCF refugee camp?”
- David: “Ask housing if you can get a waiver.”
